Fork lift truck firm mulls closure

Fork lift truck manufacturer KION Group is in consultation with staff over the potential closure of its factory in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales.

The Linde site employs 203 people in manufacturing, engineering, sales, service and administration. Consultation will last for at least 90 days and the company said that staff would be offered jobs at other sites in the event of closure.

The KION group said that the reorganisation was part of efforts to improve the efficiency of its European production network.

Theodor Maurer chief executive of Linde Material Handling, a subsidiary of KION Group, said: “Our goal is to significantly improve our container handling and heavy truck business. In addition we intend to further increase the long-term competitiveness of our offerings to customers through a revised strategy for the container handling business and the heavy forklift truck segment of our Linde brand.”

The group said that Linde Material Handling, would continue to sell container handling products and heavy forklift trucks to customers globally after any restructure.
