Free guide to reducing kitchen waste

Tips for buying and cooking food the ‘green’ way will be available via a booklet produced by the Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment (INCPEN).

The popular guide ‘The Green Kitchen: recipes for a better planet’ has just come out in its third edition and will be available free to local authorities for a limited period.

It offers advice on how to shop and cook in an energy-efficient and environmentally-responsible way as well as including seasonal recipe ideas.

INCPEN director Jane Bickerstaffe said: “The Government has done a great job promoting recycling but there are other simple steps we can all take to help minimise waste. For example, people should buy the right amount to avoid wasting food, even though small portions use more packaging. Packaging typically protects ten times its weight of food and uses only one-tenth the energy invested in growing and preparing food.”
