Green city garden scoops silver medal at Chelsea Flower Show

Recycled garden waste from West Country homes has helped a Chelsea Flower Show garden scoop a silver medal.

Up on the Roof, an urban garden, was designed by Jennifer Hirsch to highlight the positive horticultural steps that can be taken, even in the smallest and most challenging of spaces.

As well as using green waste provided by Hinton Organics, the garden, backed by primatologist and environmental campaigner Dr Jane Goodall, includes water butt benches to store storm water, and pollution-tolerant planting that helps cool the roof.

Hinton Organics managing director Angus Cunningham said: “Using recycled green waste in a Chelsea Flower Show garden is quite innovative and it shows what can be done with a little imagination and vision — even on a roof in the heart of a city.”
