Greenstar UK acquires Verdant Group

Greenstar UK, an Irish-based recycling waste management company, has acquired Kent-based Verdant Group, waste service provider to UK local authorities. The move could see Greenstar bring its turnover to £121 million and manage over 270,000 tonnes of recyclable material per year. The enlarged Greenstar Group will have approximately 1,450 employees and operate a fleet of 525 trucks. Commenting on the acquisition, Greenstar managing director Ian Wakelin said: This is a significant acquisition for Greenstar and strongly supports our strategic objective of becoming the leading recycling led waste management company in the UK through the development of a nationwide footprint of recycling and reprocessing facilities. The municipal waste management market is valued at approximately £1.6 billion, of which some 40% is outsourced to the private sector. The combination of Verdants strength in municipal collection and Greenstars processing capabilities puts us in a unique position to compete in this market. Verdants core business is the provision of refuse collection, recycling and other associated services under long term contracts to 19 local authorities, based mainly in the South East. Co-founder Jon Miles said: We believe that the success of both companies to date will be further enhanced by this development. From a strategic and cultural point of view there are great synergies between the two organisations which will provide a strong platform for further growth and development of the enlarged entity.
