Greenstar's Ian Wakelin appointed new chief executive of Biffa

Ian Wakelin founder and current chief executive of Greenstar UK has been appointed the new chief executive of Biffa Group to oversee both companies.

Following the acquisition of Greenstar by Biffa’s shareholders Montagu Private Equity and Global Infrastructure Partners, the two companies will now merge together.

Wakelin said: “I am delighted that the board has offered me this opportunity to lead the combined Greenstar and Biffa business.

“We undoubtedly have the best platform for growth in the UK waste industry and I look forward to working with the rest of the Biffa team to realise the full potential of this business.”

Wakelin founded Greenstar in 2001, which has since become one of the UK’s leading waste management companies.

Biffa’s current interim chief executive and director of Montagu Mark Keough will continue as an advisor to the new chief executive and the rest of the senior management team as they develop a new plan for the combined businesses.

He said:“We are pleased to have retained Ian as chief executive of the combined business. He has impressed all of us with his track record and leadership qualities and we look forward to great things from the new Biffa.”

Biffa announced in May this year that chief executive of Biffa, Andre Horbach had stepped down from his post.
