Q: What is your product/technology?
The Hach Lange TIM 840 Titrator is a dedicated titration station for use in biogas generation facilities. It monitors the organic acids/total inorganic carbon buffering capacity (FOS/TAC) ratio - a key indicator of efficiency. The titrator can also store up to nine other methods such as measurement of pH and redox potential for additional key process information.
Q: How does it work?
Using a pH electrode the FOS/TAC ratio is calculated using a two step end point potentiometric titration. The sample is first titrated with 0.1N sulphuric acid to pH 5.0 which measures the carbon buffering capacity as CaCO3 and then continues to pH 4.4 where the total buffering capacity takes into account all organic acids in the sample. Pre-programmed equations then convert the result into the FOS/TAC ratio.

All you need is 5ml of coarsely filtered sample, press Run and the result is displayed in five to seven minutes.

Q: Any savings?
Bacteria require optimum conditions to produce biogas from the digestion of organic matter. Reliable, on-site analysis is required in combination with continuously operating process instruments. Loading excessive levels of biomass into a digester may have severe economic consequences and could potentially lead to biomass inactivation and necessitate a cost-intensive restart. Conversely, under-loading a biomass digester could also have financial implications, because less electricity is produced and potential revenue is lost.
Q: What about maintenance?
Routine maintenance of the titrator is not necessary, though an annual service contract is available to have the instrument functionality evaluated. Maintenance and calibration of the electrode is dependent on the degree of usage.
Q: What is its life span?
There is no finite lifetime for the product or electrode, with good electrode maintenance and cleaning it is possible that the user will have no problems for several years and at this point it would be the electrode and not often the titrator which may need replacing.

Dying to change your jeans
A process that can create a pair of jeans while producing up to 87% less cotton waste is being developed by chemical company Clariant.
The Advanced Denim process uses up to 92% less water (jeans usually require 2,500 gallons), and 30% less energy than conventional methods.
The development was unveiled at the Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference, in Washington, America. Textile engineer Miguel Sanchez said that Clariant was in talks with leading jean manufacturers.
Advanced Denim production methods use just one dying vat – as opposed to 15 plus an array of potentially harmful chemicals – plus a new generation of liquid sulfur dyes that require only a single, sugar-based reducing agent.
If just 25% of the world’s denim jeans (2bn jeans are produced each year) were dyed using this technology it would save enough water for 1.7m people a year – or 2.5bn gallons a year.
