Happy 1st Birthday to WEEE!

One year on from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations being implemented, lamp compliance scheme Recolight says that progress is encouraging.

From 1 July 2007 producers of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) were required to finance the collection, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal of end of life EEE. Fridges, TVs, computer screens and gas discharge lamps were covered by the new legislation.

Recolight has 1,000 recycling lamp collection points across the UK and collects gas discharge lamps found in office, fluorescent and street lighting.

Chief executive Eddie Taylor said: Weve had a busy year, like all producer compliance schemes. Over the past year we have had a healthy membership and return of lamps for recycling.

Like all schemes you go through a learning curve and you learn as you go. We have had no major problems and weve learnt things for this year and will learn for the next. The next step is to carry on with what we are doing, extend our collection options, help promote public awareness and make improvements to our system.
