Hazard waste laws 'outdated'

The European Commission has declared the hazardous waste rules obsolete and proposed an overhaul that would see the mixing of hazardous waste made legal.
A consultation has been launched by the Commission's environment directorate because advances in waste legislation since the early 1990's have meant the current hazardous waste rules have become outdated.
The consultation states that subsequent laws have "led to diverging interpretations by the member states" of what the hazardous waste rules mean.
The existing law bans the mixing of different hazardous waste streams, but the consultation proposes this ban be lifted, except where mixing would worsen the environmental impact.
