Illegal tip owner loses jail term appeal

Judges have upheld a four-year jail sentence handed to a crime boss who ran a 65,000-tonne illegal waste site.

In June Hugh O’Donnell, 64, of Reading, was convicted of running an illegal waste site in Aldermaston the size of five football pitches.

He was arrested in 2008 during a raid by police and Environment Agency officers, who also discovered an unlicensed handgun, ammunition and £50,000 in cash.

After serving a term in jail for firearms offences, O’Donnell was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court for four years for money laundering and 22 months for waste offences, to be served concurrently.

He appealed against the length of the sentence at the Court of Appeal but a panel of three judges dismissed the plea.
