Industry chief calls for action across ‘recycling loop’

A more comprehensive approach to tighter regulation across the entire waste and recycling supply chain is vital, according to a sector leader.

Chris Dow

Chris Dow (left), chief executive of Closed Loop Recycling, told MRW ministers must take a lead on reviewing regulation “across the recycling loop”.

He said: “Blockages in the loop need to be identified, starting with consumers and at the kerbside, then following the chain from MRFs to reprocessors - in the UK and abroad - through to packaging companies and brand owners, then back to consumers again.

“Only in doing this can appropriate solutions be provided which will enable our growing industry, with adequate supplies of good quality feed stock, to develop further and thrive on a world-wide scale.”

For instance, Dow said that reform to the PRN/PERN system and a greater enforcement of the Transfrontier Shipment Regulations were “equally important” to the MRF code of practice.
