Industry welcomes packaging committee's new chair

The waste and resources industry has widely greeted the appointment of 360 environmental director Phil Conran as chair of the Advisory Committee on Packaging (ACP).

A series of tweets from the sector revealed support for the new incumbent, left. The Environmental Services Association (ESA) said Defra had made a “perfect choice” and suggested it indicated a new direction for the committee.

ESA policy adviser Roy Hathaway added: “An excellent choice by Defra Waste in my humble opinion.”

Ray Georgeson, chief executive of the Resource Association, said: “ACP gets an early Xmas present in the shape of Phil Conran as their new chair.”

Steve Lee, chief executive at the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, also offered his congratulations.

The ACP was set up in 1997 and revamped in 2010 to advise Defra on the packaging recycling targets under the producer responsibility regime.

Former chair Bob Lisney stepped down as chair in September.
