Keeping lone workers safe

Q: What is your product?

Identicom lone worker device.

Q: How does it work?

Identicom looks like a normal ID badge, but the state-of-the-art product enables the lone worker to covertly raise an alarm if threatened and it allows a third party to listen to what is happening and record events, whatever the distance.

The device can also support the pinpointing of a worker’s location using GSM/LBS technology.

Q: Where would it ideally be used?

Anywhere where someone is working alone.

Q: How is it different?

Identicom looks like an ordinary identity badge, but it allows a user who is feeling unsafe to request monitoring or specific assistance with a situation they are facing.

They can discreetly open a live audio channel to an alarm receiving centre, allowing dedicated staff to monitor what is happening, capture audio evidence and make an assessment of the level of support required - involving the police if needed.

Q: What benefits does it offer?

The Health and Safety Executive estimates the cost to an organisation of a single physical assault to be in excess of £20,000.

Compare this to the cost of implementing an effective training and lone worker safety solution, which costs little more than 50p a day.

Q: Where has it been used?

As well as Smurfit Kappa, Identicom is used extensively in a selection of companies including the NHS, Travelodge, Hilti, Sky, Veolia, some housing associations, and in local government.

Q: Cost?

From 50p a day.

Q: Any savings?

It is dependent on the quantity ordered.

Q: How is it future-proofed?

It is being evolved to accommodate changes in legislation. For example, corporate manslaughter and corporate homicide legislation.

Q: Any future applications?

The 2G and 3G versions have the option of a camera capable of taking and relaying video.

Q: How many have you sold and where?

We have sold 100,000, primarily in the UK, but more recently worldwide including the US, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the Middle East.

Q: Anything else?

Identicom, through Connexion2’s SoloProtect, is BS8484-approved, guaranteeing a police escalation one level above a 999 call, where deemed appropriate.

Included in the solution is the Identicom device, inclusive billing, 24/7 manned monitoring, SIM card, mobile network usage, device training and monthly reporting.
