Landfill operators to fund sites after closure

Landfill operators to fund sites after closure

Landfill operators will have to put aside cash for the maintenance and management of sites once they have closed, under Environment Agency (EA) proposals.

Site managers will need to make cash available for the aftercare of the site from the first day of its operation, if last weeks plans are adopted.

This is to ensure the rules reflect changes made by the Landfill Directive. Landfill sites must be managed for up to 60 years after they have closed so that they do not impact on the environment.

Liz Parkes, head of waste regulations at the EA, said: These proposals put the emphasis of providing aftercare on the company.
