Lewisham introduces mattress recycling service

Lewisham Council is leading the way in recycling by becoming one of the first local authorities in the country to introduce a mattress recycling service.

Residents can obtain a sticker from any of Lewishams libraries, place it on the mattress and then leave it out with their refuse and recycling bin for collection on their usual collection day.

The mattresses are being recycled by south east London company, Matt UK.

Matt UK director Ray Bagnall said: We can recycle up to 93 per cent of a mattress.

Over 6,000 mattresses were dumped on Lewishams streets between August 2009 and January 2010.
