London Zoo buys recycled plastic furniture

London Zoo has bought several outdoors benches and ‘sofas’ made with recycled plastic as part of its aims to divert waste from landfill.

Marmax have supplied the zoo with 80 pieces of outdoors furniture completely made out of recycled milk bottles. They said this has diverted more than 200,000 plastic bottles from landfill.

“ZSL London Zoo is committed to reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill, and Marmax furniture supports this perfectly. Their products were already in use at our sister zoo, Whipsnade so we were delighted to introduce the range to ZSL London Zoo,” said Jamie Turner, ZSL London Zoo estates manager.

As part of the zoo’s waste management plan, it also recycles more than 2,500 tonnes of ‘zoo poo’; waste from herbivores is used as fertilizer, while waste from carnivores is used as fuel at an energy from waste plant.
