Welsh plastic recycler Plastic Sorting Limited (PSL) has signed a major contract to supply material to packaging specialist Signode.
PET bottles recycled at PSL’s new reprocessing facility in Blackwood will be manufactured into plastic strapping at Signode’s plant in Swansea. Plastic strapping is used around the outside of packaging to keep it more secure.
Signode has switched from using virgin material to recycled material over the past ten years but had to import processed plastic from Europe because it found it so difficult to source from the UK.
Signode Consumables Operations unit manager Colin Starke said: “Before reaching this agreement, we were importing the raw material from Europe which meant additional freight costs as well a greater level of carbon emissions. We are delighted that following trials with PSL, we are able to acquire super clean PET flake from a reprocessor much closer to home.”
PSL will supply super clean PET flake to Signode, following trials between the firms to ensure the material meets Signode’s standards.
PSL sustainability director Colin Keyse said: “This represents a big step forward for recycling in Wales. It is only through closing the loop that the full benefits of this process are felt. It takes Wales a step closer to its goal of One Planet Living.”
