Marks & Spencer targets cost-conscious shoppers with eco-campaign

Marks & Spencer has launched a marketing drive to help cash-strapped shoppers save money by making "green" lifestyle changes.

The Plan A Way to Save campaign, which marks the second anniversary of the retailer's environmental programme, enables consumers to cut costs by up to £1,000 a year and will be supported online, in stores and on wash labels in clothing.

Marks & Spencer is providing tips on concerns such as cutting food waste and lowering energy bills and rewarding success with incentives such as vouchers.

Marks & Spencer executive chairman Sir Stuart Rose said: "Our customers, like everyone, are feeling the pinch. That's why we've introduced Plan A Way to Save, which makes it as easy as possible for our customers to make a few simple changes in their homes."
Rose said tough economic times should not distract from the need for businesses to be good corporate citizens and corporate social responsibility was good for business.

He said: "Plan A was developed to address important environmental and social issues but in many areas of our business it's actually driving efficiency savings."
