Member of public killed by refuse collection truck

A member of the public has been killed after being hit by a refuse collection vehicle in Kent.

The woman, who police said was in her 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene on Tuesday morning after being struck by the vehicle on York Street in the town of Broadstairs, which is in Thanet District Council. Although it is understood that the vehicle was not one of Thanet's vehicles and was not operating on council business.

Kent Police said that the vehicle was operated by a company contracted to collect refuse and would not give further details.

Its serious collision investigation unit is appealing for witnesses to the incident.
