New glass packaging targets in force this month

New targets for business glass packaging will come into force on 24 November, Defra has announced.

Resource minister Dan Rogerson laid the new requirements before Parliament on Monday, confirming the expected targets MRW reported in March.

The current 81% target for obligated producers has been amended, as has the 63% and 37% split between remelt and aggregate applications.

From this month, the compliance target for 2014 has been lowered to 75% and the split changed to 65-35.

In 2015 the target will be 76%, with a remelt/aggregate split of 66-34.

From 2016 onwards, it will be 77%, with a split of 67-33.

The changes follow new research into the flow of glass packaging and distortions caused by fraud in 2009-10.
