The OPRL is now the standard for communicating packaging recyclability in the UK, endorsed by industry and recognised by 62% of consumers. The scheme provides a simple and consistent message for customers on how they can recycle in their local area; provides a practical solution to apply alongside statutory information; supports local authorities collecting materials not currently widely recycled; ensures recyclate streams are not contaminated; and encourages innovation so more materials can be recycled. The OPRL brings start-ups, SMEs, NGOs, charities and international companies together to give UK consumers the same clear message.   

BrightHouse (below)

BrightHouse

Rent-to-own retailer BrightHouse has increased its focus on waste and recycling, which is reflected in the results achieved so far. Adhering to the waste hierarchy has generated new channels for reuse, with one example including selling low net book value items to jobbers and auctioneers. BrightHouse is geared for refurbishment, with around 3,500-4,000 items a week being achieved. Emphasis is made to ensure that landfill is a last resort, and waste reduction activity is put into action across the business to accelerate recycling, reduce the carbon footprint and increase environmental competence.

AS Watson

Health and beauty manufacturer AS Watson in the UK owns and operates Superdrug and Savers. In 2014 it undertook an increased emphasis on waste management processes and staff engagement at all levels of the business. It has achieved zero waste to landfill, an improvement in recycling rates, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions from waste. It also changed from individual general waste collections at stores to a full backhaul of all waste streams to eliminate landfill, maximise recycling and maximise revenue.

Environmental objectives involve working smarter and using resources more efficiently, with an emphasis on direct engagement with staff and the communities they live and work in. Its recycling and resource management strategy implemented across the London portfolio resulted in The Green Academy – Westfield’s School of Sustainability, which was established and delivered through partnership with Veris Strategies, a sustainability programme provider. It created a shift change in both operational principles and stakeholder communications by opting for sustainable ‘positive use’ treatment of all waste outputs.

Tesco with DS Smith

DS Smith has worked with Tesco for several years on waste management projects, and the retailer operated a backhaul model collecting cardboard and polythene for recycling. The next phase was to improve efficiencies by segregating food waste and diverting it to AD for production of biogas. Recycling zones were set up at the back of each store to collect different waste streams. A transparent protective plastic lining was introduced so that food waste could be safely transported to the central hub, then tipped in to a leak-proof walking floor trailer. DS Smith worked with Whitham Mills Engineering to find a solution for handling and transporting the food waste more efficiently, using a bespoke cage tipper mechanism. The project has reduced in-store waste arisings by 25% a year.

In January 2012, Intu Chapelfield shopping centre in Norwich was recycling 65% of its waste, with only 35% being sent to landfill, no mean feat when the majority of shopping centres sub-contract their waste management. The centre’s environmental team set a target of zero waste to landfill by December 2014 which it achieved in August 2013, 16 months ahead of schedule. Year on year, its approach has saved 20% in waste management costs, and shows how a commitment to recycling on-site can result in financial savings, employment opportunities and community benefits.

LSS with Grundon (below)

LSS delivers year-round housekeeping and cleaning services at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, as well as during Wimbledon fortnight. The scope and high standards of the venue mean there is a great focus on the teams that service it. The LSS team works closely with Grundon Waste Management to deliver waste management services. There is a strong focus at the venue of working in collaborative partnerships to achieve shared goals, a focus which is exemplified by its recycling achievements.
