Packaging law change mooted

Calls to change the law to require packaging producers to recycle material from the household waste stream received backing from the compliance industry this week.

Valpak agreed with the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) that such a move would increase recycling.

LARAC spoke out after a report by sustainability charity Forum for the Future said ambitious material-specific council recycling targets were vital for the UK to improve its record. The body representing councils insisted producers should be set targets rather than councils.

Valpak chief executive Steve Gough said: Valpak agrees that a link between local authority and business recycling targets could lead to increased efficiency in UK recycling.
