Packaging levy mooted for Irish Republic

Republic of Ireland environment minister Phil Hogan has launched a consultation on the operation of a possible packaging levy in the country.

Hogan said: “In line with the Programme for Government commitment, my department, as part of a waste reduction strategy, wishes to examine options regarding the introduction of a possible packaging levy.”

The consultation seeks stakeholder views on a possible levy, how such a levy might operate, international experiences of similar levies and how a levy might be structured to provide a reduction in packaging waste. The consultation closes on 5 August 2011.
