Paper printing habits cost UK businesses millions

UK businesses are the top wasters in Europe in terms of unused printed pages, according to research by an international printer manufacturer announced this week.

About £280 million per year often goes straight in the bin due to over-zealous printing at work, with one in six pages printed never being used, Lexmark reveals.

German businesses are the most waste conscious, claiming that only 6% of their printed pages are never used, compared to 17% in the UK.

Almost 40% of office workers said they printed out emails simply to read them, and almost a tenth printed everything that was sent to them.

Lexmark managing director Giovanni Guisti said: "The fact that so much of what is printed is never even used should be ringing alarm bells in finance departments across the country. Yet incredibly, few businesses are fully aware of what their organisation spends on documents, let alone what is wasted."
