Londoners recycle more at home than they do at work because they are not provided with accessible bins, a survey has found.
In a survey of office workers Today Paper Round, a London-based office recycling company, found that 70% of people recycled at home compared to 30% at work. It found that the main reason people do not recycle at work is because of lack of bins.
Paper Round director Bill Swann said: Businesses need to make it easier for office workers to recycle. The average office worker uses up to 100 sheets of paper every day. We are missing an opportunity to fulfil the real reasons why we recycle, if we do not practice it at work as well as we do at home, which is to reduce our carbon footprint, save natural resources and save costs.
The survey of 100 office workers in London found 58% think they generate more recyclable waste at home and feel it is more important to recycle there.
But with paper, cups, cardboard and plastic all being recyclable it is estimated workers actually generate double the amount of waste at work than at home, according to Government-funded programme Envirowise.
Federation of Small Businesses environmental policy officer Nyree Connell said: Small firms producing small quantities or sporadic loads of waste are often unable to take advantage of economies of scale available through waste contracts, making disposal expensive. Improved local facilities for small businesses through civic amenity siteswould enable small firms to play a more active role in waste recycling and responsible waste disposal.
The survey also found that friends and family influenced recycling attitudes more than the media or workplace.
