Pizza chain pays the price

Italian-style restaurant chain Pizza Express has been fined £75,000 for failing to recover and recycle 1,676 tonnes of packaging waste in 2002.

The company was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court this week. The court heard that Pizza Express had registered with Biffpack but its membership was terminated in November 2002 after it failed to pay invoices.

An Environment Agency investigation found that all four invoices for the costs of 2002 recovery and recycling were outstanding. The company had failed to pay £52,786.44 the entire cost of compliance for that year.

Investigating officer Tina Lamont said: Pizza Express could have avoided this legal action had it complied with its environmental obligations by ensuring it met with the packaging waste regulations.
