Global plastics production increased by 6% in 2010, a report by trade association PlasticsEurope has revealed.
Plastics – the Facts found that the industry produced 265 million tonnes of plastics last year, along with increasing turnover and a growth in recycling and energy recovery rates.
However, despite this significant bounce back from the economic crisis of 2008, last year was marked by a 2% reduction in jobs in the industry. This was attributed to company closures and a switch in power from Europe to China.
Claus-Jürgen Simon, market and economics manager at PlasticsEurope, said: “In the first six months of 2011, we can only notice that the pace of recovery has slowed down because of the reduction in inventory and uncertainty over economic growth.
“With stable exports and growing imports, the trade surplus is also expected to decrease from 2010.”
