Princess Anne opens Cory MRF

Princess Anne has officially opened Cory Environmental’s new Smugglers Way MRF in Wandsworth.

The 84,000 tonne facility and on-site reuse workshop is fed by municipal waste from the Western Riverside Waste Authority.

Construction on the £25m MRF began in October 2008 and ran for 13 months. It  will send residual waste to Cory’s forthcoming Riverside Resource Recovery facility in Belvedere, Bexley.

Speaking at the unveiling, HRH Princess Anne said: “This is a really important development for the handling of waste, recycling and reuse and a much greater opportunity for education.”

Cory Environmental chief executive officer Peter Gerstrom told MRW: “This has been a fantastic day it’s a culmination of years of work.”

He added that the new MRF was the “first part of a jigsaw” which included the onsite re-use workshop and the Belvedere energy from waste facility.
