A certification scheme being developed to verify the quality of recovered tyre shred has raised concerns about contamination problems.
The Waste & Resources Action Programme is inviting tenders for companies to take part in the scheme to develop rules and promote its uses.
But the work has not been welcomed by tyre recycler SITR. Special projects manager Angus Carnie told MRW: The [tyre recycling] industry needs a lot of things but it doesnt need this scheme. The problem is that people think that tyre shred is suitable for recycling but its not.
He said that SITR only accepted whole tyres because the company had had issues with contamination in the past, which damaged machinery.
Carnie said: We dont want to encourage people to shred tyres willy nilly with a self certification scheme. He explained that such a scheme would only be able to get up and running if it was self certified. People only shred tyres to debulk it for ease of transport or storage, he added.
The development of the scheme follows the publication of the Publicly Available Specification 107 and 108 for tyre materials and bales, which was jointly developed by WRAP and the Environment Agency. The two bodies are also working on the Waste Protocols Project to define when materials, such as recovered tyres, should remove their waste tag.
