The target date for re-opening the former Corus steel plant on Teesside has been delayed until the new year.
Owner SSI UK announced that an inspection of the Redcar plant facilities revealed a need for additional remedial work on the blast furnace. The plan to relight the furnace has now been moved back from 8 December to 6 January.
The company says its recruitment programme continues and is unaffected by the change of date.
Chief executive Phil Dryden said he was disappointed at not being able to meet the previous target.
“The important priority is that we complete all of the necessary work to ensure a successful start-up,” he said. “I am aware of and appreciate very much the huge level of public interest and support shown to us, and I am sure we will all be looking forward to a successful start-up of operations in the new year.”
