Research into UK paper and card packaging

Fresh research is being undertaken by WRAP and Valpak into the flow of paper and card packaging.

The organisations hope to provide Defra with “robust and independent updated estimates” of packaging placed on the market and that recycled, recovered or sent to landfill in the UK from 2014-20.

The estimates help to frame Defra’s policies, and are used to fulfill EU requirements for reporting recycling performance.

To help achieve the objectives, Valpak has established a steering group representing industry, Defra and the Environment Agency to oversee the project and provide insights into the outputs.

It is due to report in early 2016.

This research follows earlier collaborative projects on the market flow of glass, metals and plastic packaging.

Simon Weston, director of raw materials at the Confederation of Paper Industries, said: “The paper industry has for a long time been a leading material in recycling. This work will provide valuable insight not only into the amount of material in the UK but also help to identify where improvements can be made.”
