Reuse no better than recycling

No environmental benefit is achieved by reusing printer cartridges rather than recycling them and buying new ones, according to a study.

Independent research firm First Environment found that cartridges made and recycled by HP had the same impact as remanufactured alternatives.

This result challenges the traditional view that reusing products is preferable to recycling them.

More than 80% of the environmental impact of a printer cartridge was found to come after production.

The LaserJet Cartridge Environmental Comparison study concluded: No definitive statement can be made about the environmental preferability of one product type over the other.
