REY joins calls for export destination transparency

Revelations in ITVs Tonight programme about UK recyclates being dumped in India has prompted Resource Efficiency Yorkshire programme director Andrew Hartley to call for more export transparency.

He said: The Tonight programme has done an excellent job in exposing the importance of transparency and best practice, when it comes to recycling and waste management.

It is time for contractors to demonstrate their commitment to the localities they serve by revealing exactly what they do with the materials they collect. We all know that export of recycled materials or product is a normal part of business. After all, recycling transforms rubbish into a valuable resource and an internationally tradable commodity. UK recycling businesses need to ensure that recycling export markets are treated with the same care and attention as we would expect here at home. There is a financial cost to this but it is a lot less than the cost of trying to convince sceptical householders and businesses in the UK to take part in local recycling schemes. Without their participation there would be no recycling sector in the UK.
