Safe in the knowledge

Irelands pay-as-you-go waste legislation comes into force on January 1, 2005, and with it comes the need to automate the collection of statistics and identification of what waste was collected where.

Wiklow-based Sturdy Products is the Irish distributor for Taylor waste container products, which offers a complete range of ID systems for kerbside boxes, wheeled bins and trade waste containers. While legislation will allow for operators to measure pay as you go either by weight or volume, most operators will use weight, meaning that they will need to fit tags to existing containers, according to managing director John Hanlon.

This has the potential to cause costly problems, says Hanlon, where one type of tagging system is required to be fitted on an inventory that would typically consist of several different manufacturers containers. Whether its replacing all existing tags to standardise or replacing existing containers to standardise either way it proves to be a costly exercise.

To address this problem, Taylors TagSafe allows a variety of chip types to be mounted safely on the Taylor range of metal Continental Waste Containers. Director Alston Taylor explains: TagSafe is the result of an extensive development programme to ensure that a variety of ID systems will work with the metal Continental Trade Waste Container range. PM Onboard and Sulo are among several suppliers we have worked with to ensure that operators have a choice of ID systems that will work with our Taylor products.

TagSafe is a patented chip holder, which is in an inconspicuous black cylinder that accepts four variants of chip used by the leading suppliers of ID systems. Since April all Taylor Continental Containers have been ID system ready as they are equipped with a TagSafe location hole hidden out of site. The chip holder can be fitted at any time the user wishes to adopt a tagging system simply by inserting the required chip into the holder and this is then pushed into the location hole. When this is done the holder and chip are locked into place permanently. u
