Scotland's first hazardous landfill gets go-ahead

Permission has been secured for Avondale Environmental to operate the only hazardous landfill site in Scotland.

A permit was awarded with the aid of SLR Consulting, which has now helped gain six of the 20 awarded in the UK to date. The facility near Falkirk will accept soils from industrial manufacturing sites and gas works, as well as air pollution control residues.

SLR Consulting Edinburgh office technical director Gordon Robb said: Initially, SLR was retained to prepare the hazardous site pollution prevention and control permit application with associated environmental risk assessments on nuisance and health, stability, landfill gas and hydrogeology, all of which we completed in house.

We also supervised and interpreted site investigation works which included drilling and a detailed geophysical survey.

As well as this, the Avondale site  incorporates landfill gas recovery facilities to generate renewable electricity which is supplied to the National Grid, with SLR currently completing an appraisal of waste treatment technologies which could also be added to the facility.
