Shanks acquires John W Hannay's UK business

Shanks Waste Management has announced the acquisition of the UK business and assets of John W Hannay & Co.

The deal includes Hannay’s trade waste and recycling operations in Scotland and south east England as well as an established and growing security shredding business-

Shanks Waste Management managing director Ian Goodfellow said: “This acquisition further demonstrates our commitment to increased recycling and diverting material from landfill.

“The geographic locations of Hannay’s sites are an excellent fit with our existing businesses in Scotland and east London and there is an obvious synergy through an increased recycling capacity and our existing customer base in these regions.”

Two Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs) in Edinburgh with capacity for 60,000 tonnes per annum will pass to Shanks as well as one MRF in Aberdeen that processes 30,000 tonnes each year.

The deal also includes’s east London operations, 110 staff, 17,000 customers and 38 vehicles.

Hannay’s chairman Tony Abram said that the sale would allow the company to further develop its Irish and overseas business interests.
