The DLS is an inductive metal detector manufactured by S+S and used to detect metal in recycled material. It detects all metals, stainless, non-ferrous and ferrous metals, even when enclosed in the product
Q: How does it work?
DLS uses a high frequency electrical field to detect metal particles and when metal contamination is sensed a control system will initiate an audible or visual alarm, activate a rejection system or send a signal to the line control to stop the product conveyor belt so that contaminated product can be removed
Q: Where would it ideally be used?
DLS systems are widely used in the plastics and wood recycling industry to protect shredders, crushers and other size reduction equipment from damage due to metal contamination. Typical applications include recycling plastic bottles or components such as UPVC window frames and wood panels and other items prior to size reduction.
Q: How is it different?
The DLS is constructed to enable it to be easily installed into existing conveyor systems. Most conventional metal detection systems require special purpose conveyors while the DLS can be installed with a few relatively simple modifications to site conveying. The model size range is large enabling all types of application to be accommodated.
Q: What benefits are there?
Benefits can accrue with the ease of installation as well as the protection afforded to shredders where damage can cost many thousands to rectify. Plant downtime is reduced and efficiency increased. Product quality is enhanced by reducing metal contamination in the finished product.
Q: Any savings?
It is easy and therefore less costly to install plus there are significant savings in the repair and replacement costs for subsequent processing plant.
Q: Where has it been used?
DLS systems are used worldwide by many processors of plastics, UPVC window frames and plastics and wood recyclers. It is also supplied to a number of OEM suppliers for use in their own plants and systems products. S+S DLS units are recognised as the standard for the prevention of metal contamination at the primary processing stage.
The equipment cost is relatively low being generally under £5000 depending on the size and specification of the unit. Also since installation is a simple process then other costs associated with the purchase are also contained.
Q: What about maintenance?
Once installed and commissioned DLS systems are generally maintenance free. The electronic control system is modular and faults can be easily diagnosed and where needed, replacements made.
Q: Life span?
All S+S systems are designed for long working life and the DLS is no exception. The original concept was introduced some years ago and there are many original systems still installed and working very effectively.
