Sims reviews UK operations

Sims Metal Management is reviewing the future of sites within its UK operations.

The company has 42 locations across Britain and is part of the largest metal recycler in the world employing more than 6,300 people. The group achieved a turnover of over £5.8bn in the financial year ending 2011.

In a statement, Sims said: “As with all of our global locations, we regularly undertake reviews of our operations in order to maximize operational efficiency. The UK metals recycling business is no exception.

“Due to the continued economic malaise in the UK economy, a small number of sites have been targeted for reposition without sacrificing our competitive position. The UK metals recycling business will be stronger placed to compete in the current economic climate and will provide a platform for continued growth as and when more positive economic activity returns.”

The company says it will not be providing further information while the review is being carried out.
