Sita swaps EfW for gasification in Perthshire

Sita UK has replaced plans to develop an energy from waste site at Binn Farm, Perthshire with a fresh application for a gasification facility.

A spokesperson for Sita told MRW that the technology change is a result of a change in knowledge regarding appropriate waste facilities since the original EfW proposal was submitted. He said: “Gasification is used for small scale waste management and so it made more sense to use this.”

Sita has just submitted a planning application to build a 60,000 tonne per year gasification facility that will handle municipal waste with room to take small amounts of business waste.

Sita UK strategic development manager Martin Cracknell said: “Our aim is to submit a pre-application notification to the council in late spring, after which we will be consulting locally in Perth and Kinross and nearby parts of Fife. Although we’re still in the early stages of this project, we’d then hope to submit a full planning application in the autumn of this year.”

The facility is among plans to develop the BinnEco Innovation Park, which will include other sustainable waste treatment facilities and technology businesses.
