Smurfit Kappa Recycling gives Argos a helping hand

Packaging recycler Smurfit Kappa Recycling is working with retail giant Argos to help the chain work achieve its zero waste to landfill target.

Smurfit Kappa Recycling has been working with Argos since September 2006 to divert more than 30,000 tonnes of cardboard and soft plastic waste from landfill.

In 2005, Argos set itself a target of achieving zero waste to landfill by 2010. Argos stores
throughout the UK return their recyclable packaging waste back to one of the eight Argos distribution centres on returning vehicles that have delivered stock. Packaging waste is then collected by Smurfit Kappa Recycling to recycle it and produce new packaging materials.

Argos central distribution project manager Mark Jones said: Waste and recycling is not the most glamorous end of the retail world but it is a subject which has grown in importance over the past few years and more often finds itself on many chief executive officers to do lists. Developing the right solution for Argos is a team effort, involving management, staff and the support of key suppliers like Smurfit Kappa Recycling.
