National Federation of Demolition Contractors concerns that plant operator training certificates are inadequate for the sectors needs, has led the organisation to consider launching its own qualification.
Certificates offered under the current Construction Plant Competence Scheme are general and not tailored to specialised plant used on certain demolition sites.
NFDC chief executive Howard Button said: Were not entirely happy with the CPCS. It doesnt apply to specific super-high reach machines. And our members dont want a normal certificate.
This issue is likely to affect the waste and recycling industry as well, as plant used in scrap and materials yards is quite specialised.
Button said the NFDC was meeting with the organisations events agent CSE to discuss training courses next month.
A more specialised certificate would benefit everyone, he said.
