SSI's interest in Corus welcomed by MP

MP for Redcar Vera Baird is “not surprised” SSI is the named firm interested in potentially bidding for Corus’ mothballed Teesside Cast Products plant.

Following the revelation that Thai steel firm SSI visited Corus’ TCP plant last Thursday (29 April) Vera Baird told MRW : “I’m not surprised its SSI but I’m very pleased.SSI take 6m tonnes of steel and if itcan take 3m tonnes from the TCP plant that would be great and we could have the plant running at full capacity. Clearly,  SSI is doing its due diligence because it looked around the plant last week, so it seems to be keen. I don’t know where the actual leak came from but I do know SSI were at the works last week.”

“I rang Peter Mandelson the day I found out it was SSI and he was not surprised either. He said he would get in touch with SSI to ensure they and Corus know the Government will support them, “she added.

Addressing rumours that SSI actually made a bid in Autumn 2009, Baird commented: “I don’t know if there was a bid last year but we knew foreign buyers were interested in November and [those discussions] seemed to collapse and [Corus] mothballed it shortly after.”
