Street cleansing staff to get stab-proof vests

A London borough council has started to issuing stab-proof jackets to its street cleansing staff to protect their safety.

Wimbledon street cleaners have begun wearing stab-proof vests to protect them from potential physical abuse from night time revellers.

A Merton council spokeswoman said: The London Borough of Merton has the third lowest rate of crime in London. At a local level, no cases of physical abuse have been reported by Mertons night time street cleaners to the council. Merton takes the safety of its staff very seriously. We have issued stab-proof jackets to our night time street cleaners purely as precautionary measure.
