Although the KramerAllrad brand and its parent Wacker Neuson group are well-known across western Europe, the UK is still a growing sector for the German vehicle manufacturer. But with 50% of the company’s market for compact wheeled loaders of up to 120hp stemming from western Europe alone, the UK and its waste handling industry represents a growing sector for Kramer.
Kramer UK and Ireland sales manager Ian Moverley explains: “Perceptions of compact wheeled loaders are changing, with lots of other EU manufacturers bringing machines to the market. It has made buyers aware of what work a wheeled loader can do. We’re seeing growth in the UK market, though it is slow.”
Despite the slow nature of UK market growth, Moverley says the recycling market is one which is also of interest to the company: “[Recycling] is in relative infancy [as a market] and is certainly a growing one.”
To capitalise on this trend, Kramer launched a range of vehicles at this year’s Bauma motor show. This included a revamped 80 series premium wheeled loader range, two telehandlers and a new entry for its family of tele wheel loaders. Moverley says of the Kramer 80 series: “It is the premium line of wheeled loaders. It is predominantly bought by owner-operators, small builders and companies that want to do lots of jobs themselves. The machines offer lots of attachments and they want all the options that are available, so you have a very high specification machine.”
Of particular interest for the waste and recycling industries is the tele wheel loader range, which combines the power of a wheeled loader with the functionality of a telehandler.
Moverley says: “We have two wheeled loaders which have a telescopic boom mounted on the front, but they are classified as a wheeled loader with extended reach as opposed to a telescopic handler. It’s dedicated to working with a bucket as a wheeled loader. That machine is growing in popularity across Europe as trucks and loading hoppers get higher and volumes required are greater.”

Kramer’s newest addition to the tele wheel loader family is the 680T, a model which uses the same base machine as the new 680 wheel loader with the addition of the telescopic boom arm. The 680T features a bucket capacity of 0.95cu m, an operational weight of 5,950kg, a maximum payload capacity (in transport position) of 2,600kg and a loadover height of 4,450mm when the boom is extended.
And the 680T has other features that make it ideal for recycling, including a hydraulic quick hitch facility, fully glazed doors and a cab designed to optimise visibility. It can also operate in three steering modes: four-wheel drive, two-wheel steer and ‘crab steer’ to allow control in tight spaces, but this is also optional.
“If you get it stuck against the wall, you can put the machine into crab steer mode and walk it away from a trouble position,” Moverley explains.
The 680T is a model that Kramer is “actively promoting” for recycling in the UK, according to Moverley: “With the 680T, you’ve got manoeuv-rability, the visibility and the reach. Recycling is a compact environment where there is never any space because it is full of rubbish waiting to be dealt with, so there is not the room for a huge mass machine.
“Kramer has a good name in wheeled loaders. People in the recycling industry can also appreciate the greater operation in breakout forces and the high cabin in the centre of the machine, which allows greatly improved visibility - which is important when you’re working in an area with a lot of people moving about.”
Kramer’s redesigned 80 series features five wheeled loaders in a range of sizes and strengths, from the diminutive 380 model, which features a bucket capacity of 0.75cu m and a weight of 2,400kg, to the older 4,500kg 880 model with a bucket capacity of 1.5cu m.

The 880 wheel loader is also popular for recycling and waste handling operations because of its compact dimensions (2,950mm tall, 2,240mm wide) for its class, a tyre turning radius of 3,450mm and its large bucket capacity. The 880 also features a range of options including a reversible fan, a low-speed control and a range of attachments, including bucket grabs, high tilt and super-light materials buckets.
While the 80 series represents power, Kramer also introduced a pair of compact telehandlers at Bauma: the 1245 and the 2506, the latter being designed for materials handling in confined spaces.
“For major work on recycling there is the 2506 telehandler, which has a lift capacity of 2.5 tonnes and a reach of almost 6m. That’s classified in the ‘two by two’ category - a machine where overall height and width is limited to 2m, which makes it suitable for places where you need narrow access,” says Moverley.
The 2506 telehandler has a bucket capacity of 0.85cu m, a lifting height of 5.75m and an operational weight of 4,200kg. The 2506 also features optional extras for waste handling, including front-wheel and crab steering options, automatic hydraulic function deactivation when overloaded, a single joystick for raising, lowering and tilting out the boom, a soundproof, insulated front cabin and a number of tyre options, including industrial, construction machinery and traction tyres.
Despite the new Kramer range and their waste management adaptations, Moverley concedes that recycling is a one of the most difficult industries in which to sell machines.
He said: “It’s physically aggressive work and it’s unquantifiable - you might be loading scrap metal, tyres or aggregates. You just don’t know. We have two or three machines that run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The machines do get a lot of abuse, so people tend to want to buy equipment that is strong enough for the job.”
