Thumbs up for catering waste site

National Recycling Award-winner Terra Eco Systems has won approval to process catering waste at its composting facility in High Wycombe.

The High Heavens Waste Site, which opened last summer, converts garden and food waste from 12,000 local households into organic agricultural fertiliser.

This provides farmers with a sustainable source of soil improver.

The approval comes from the State Veterinary Service, which has been monitoring the composting process to ensure that it complies with regulations.

Its endorsement means that High Heavens is one of only 16 facilities in the country currently approved to process catering waste.

Terra Eco Systems general manager Martin Hammond said: "This approval marks us out as one of only a few companies with the skills and experience necessary to process food waste.

"It also opens up the possibility of treating commercial catering waste at the plant, in addition to the domestic waste currently being processed."
