UK second in EU lamp recycling

The latest lamp recycling figures for Europe show that the UK was the second largest recycler, with 5,370 tonnes of lamps collected and processed.

The international data was collated and submitted by lamp recycling schemes including Ecolamp in Italy, Ambilamp in Spain, Récylum in France, Lightcycle in Germany and the UK’s Recolight (see table below).

According to the Environment Agency, the UK has achieved a year-on-year increase in lamp recycling since 2008, from 23.2% to 52.8% in 2013. The recast WEEE Directive includes a national target for all WEEE categories of 45% and 65% by 2019.

Recolight says lamps accounted for 3% of tonnage of business electronic and electric equipment placed on market but represented 25% of business WEEE collected.
