Veolia uses CHP to power solvent recovery plant

Veolia Environmental Services plans to build a £3.5m combined heat and power (CHP) plant to generate electricity for its Stalbridge Solvent Recovery plant in South Liverpool.

The renewable energy facility will reduce the plant’s gas fuel consumption by 90% and save 5,000 tonnes of carbon a year.

The solvent recovery facility serves the region’ s pharmaceutical and chemical industry, receiving waste solvents from production processes, recovering them through distillation and returning them to the manufacturing chain. It would take 150,000 barrels of crude oil to produce the equivalent volume of solvents, such as ethanol for  local manufacturers. .

Veolia Stalbridge project manager Tony Garnett said: “We are committed to improving environmental performance and lowering our carbon footprint. At the moment we recover approximately 68% of the solvent material processed at Stalbridge with just over 30% being taken off site for disposal.

“The CHP plant will enable us to boost the recovery rate to almost 90% [by using the residue to fuel the CHP facility] and will generate steam and electricity to reduce our gas fuel consumption by 90% as well.”

Veolia has been working with Envirolink Northwest, an organisation which aims to raise the profile of renewable energy in the UK; The Mersey Partnership, which promotes local business, and The Liverpool Chamber of Commerce. Wider stakeholders will also be contacted before the scheme’s submission at the end of the year.

Liverpool Chamber of Commerce head of policy and information Maresa Molloy commented: “This is a highly innovative solution that will substantially reduce overall carbon consumption whilst at the same time improving the commercial efficiency of the operation creating and securing jobs.”
