Viridor applies for disposal permit extension to Horton landfill site

Viridor has submitted a planning application to West Sussex County Council to extend the disposal period of its Horton landfill site by 10 months to ensure it will be filled.

Currently set to stop disposing of waste at the site in October 2010, Viridor hopes to extend this to August 2011 because it believes the site will not be full by October. The void needs to be filled to ensure the site contours and levels approved under the existing planning permission.

If granted, the extension to the disposal period will not affect the site restoration and closure target date of April 2012.

Viridor regional director Graham Warren said: “We want to complete the final agreed restoration of the Horton site at the earliest opportunity. We are focused on recycling and renewable energy, and waste management market conditions are rapidly changing. Viridor remains totally committed to the existing planning requirements to fully restore the site by 1 April 2012.”

The plans are to be discussed with the local community at a forthcoming site community liaison group meeting.
