Canary Wharf Group has become the first property industry company to achieve the Carbon Trust waste standard.
It is also among the first 10 organisations of all kinds to gain this recognition since the certification was launched in November 2013.
The company, which owns the office and retail complex on London’s Isle of Dogs, has recorded a 15.6% absolute reduction in waste across the certification period.
Recognition through the standard is awarded to organisations that successfully measure, manage and reduce their waste output year on year, either through an absolute reduction or by dealing with it more effectively.
Canary Wharf Group said it works with staff, tenants, suppliers and contractors to manage waste, which has seen 63% of commercial waste, 98% of construction waste and 100% of demolition/excavation waste being recycled or reused in 2013.
Darran Messem, managing director of certification at the Carbon Trust, said: “Canary Wharf Group should be applauded for achievements made in bringing sustainability inside the group’s projects and portfolio.”
