AbitibiBowater Recycling Europe, the waste management firm, has been awarded a five year contract from Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council to provide its residents with a kerbside collection service.
The company takes over the existing kerbside scheme from the beginning of April, including mixed plastic and mixed cardboard collections from the end of the month, by which time it will be providing door-to-door collections to some 49,000 homes across the borough.
AbitibiBowater will also service Nuneaton & Bedworths mini recycling centres and bring sites.
Public amenities assistant director Peter Benham said: We expect the inclusion of board and plastics to attract new recyclers, adding incremental tonnage and pushing our dry recyclables rate up from the current 12.5% to 17% by 2009 -10, an increase of more than a third.
Business development director Mandy Kelly added: We already provide recycling services to the neighbouring local authorities of North Warwickshire, Hinckley & Bosworth and South Derbyshire. With plans for our new transfer station in the region, due to come on stream shortly, we looked for increased efficiencies on the ground and were in a strong position to meet Nuneaton & Bedworths cost and service parameters.
