Waste sector output returned to growth in the second quarter after a modest start of the year, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Waste sector output increased by 3% between April and June 2013 in comparison to the first three months of the year, according to the latest Index of Production.
Figures suggest a return to profitability and revenues deriving from waste activities after an uncertain first quarter, when output declined 1.1% in comparison to the last quarter of 2012.
Between April and June, activities related to waste collection, treatment and disposal rose 1.2%, while activities related to remediation and other waste management services went up 2%.
The increase in waste activities reflected the strength of the recycling industry over recent months, said the ONS.
Combined with water supply and sewerage, waste management activities contributed 0.2 percentage points to the overall 0.6 % increase in production output.
